Brief Biography
Juan de Homedes governed Malta when Ottoman forces attacked in 1551, capturing Gozo and the Order's stronghold in Tripoli.

In response he advanced the fortification of Malta against future assaults.
On Malta the Order developed hospitals, fortifications and a maritime presence while governing the islands. Its religious and charitable purposes continued alongside these public responsibilities.
