Galeas von Thun und Hohenstein had studied law and worked in the Austrian civil service before taking solemn vows in the Order.

Life and service to the Order
Elected Grand Master in 1905, he oversaw extensive charitable work during the First World War; a lieutenant acted for him during his final illness.
