Blessed Abbot Ildefonso (Alfredo) Cardinal Schuster O.S.B.
Memorial: 30 August
Born in Rome of a Bavarian father and and Southern Tyrolean mother on 18 January 1880, Alfredo entered the Benedictine monastery of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome on 13 November 1998, where he received the religious name Ildefonso.
He made his religious profession on 13 November 1900.
On 19 March 1904 he was ordained a priest, and elected abbot on 6 April 1918 at the age of 28.
Among other ecclesial duties, the Holy See entrusted him with the office of Apostolic Visitor of the Archdiocese of Milan.
He was then nominated Archbishop of Milan, and was ordained by Pope Pius XI on 29 July 1929, and named a Cardinal later that year.
His inspiration for the episcopal ministry was always Saint Charles Borromeo, whose apostolic zeal he sought to imitate in charity towards the unfortunate and by nurturing the integrity of the faith.
He convened five Diocesan Synods and, in the terror of the Second World War, intervened so that Milan would be spared.
His very active earthly life ended on 30 August 1954, and he was beatified on 12 May 1996.
In 1933 he was made a Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion of the Order of Malta.
who gave strength to Blessed Alfredo Ildefonso
so that by faith and the practice of good works
he could shed lustre on the Church
and enrich with the example of virtues
the flock entrusted to his care as a good shepherd,
grant that, by being attentive to his teaching,
we may walk securely under the guidance of the Gospel
until we behold You in Your Kingdom.
Trough our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
