Blessed Gérard founded the hospital community in Jerusalem that became the Order of St John.
Life and service to the Order
He organised care for pilgrims, sick people and the poor at the hospital near St Mary Latin. Pope Paschal II recognised the Hospitallers in 1113; the papal bull named their hospital and European hospices, confirming the reach of Gérard’s work beyond Jerusalem.
In this period the Hospitallers maintained a hospital and defended their communities in the Holy Land. Their base shifted to Acre after the loss of Jerusalem, and to Cyprus after the fall of Acre in 1291.
