Raymond du Puy succeeded Blessed Gérard and became the Order’s second leader.
Life and service to the Order
He gave the brothers their first written Rule and helped shape the community’s religious and hospitaller life. Under his leadership the Order developed its care for the sick while taking on the defence of pilgrims and its institutions.
In this period the Hospitallers maintained a hospital and defended their communities in the Holy Land. Their base shifted to Acre after the loss of Jerusalem, and to Cyprus after the fall of Acre in 1291.
